The traditional operating model of corporations is premised on command and control and a lopsided economic system and fails to provide a runway to achieve what people desire: feeling that they are making progress at work and knowing that they’re making an impact. The negative effects of this organizing principle are quickly unraveling:
- 250K technology workers have lost their jobs this year. Out of desire or necessity, many will not be going back into full-time employment
- A quarter of employees report experiencing burnout symptoms and this doesn’t include those who are quietly suffering
- Over 70% of creatives want to leave their current jobs and a whopping 70% of startups prefer using talent networks over full-time hires
- Extended working lives (EWL) are becoming the norm alongside longer-life expectancies as well as mini real-time sabbaticals for richer life~work blends Entrepreneurs and change-makers beat to a different drum - seeking connection, meaning, and support. They refuse to subordinate themselves to a corporate agenda and are discovering a new dance that blends creative living and work that really matters. We can speculate about what’s to come - or set to work on designing for a preferable future.
